Children's book illustration
How much does children's book illustration cost?
Cost depends on page count, illustration complexity, character count, colour work, and whether layout and cover design are included. A short picture book with simple spot art sits far below a full 32-page colour picture book with detailed backgrounds. Send us your page count, story length, and intended style and we quote the full scope rather than a per-image guess.
How many illustrations does a children's book need?
A standard 32-page picture book usually carries 12 to 16 spreads, which works out to roughly 24 to 32 pages of artwork once the title page and copyright page are accounted for. Early readers and chapter books use fewer, often one spot illustration every few pages.
What illustration styles do you work in?
We produce painterly, vector, watercolour-inspired, line-and-colour, and comic styles in both 2D and 3D. We agree the style during the concept stage with sample character art before full production begins.
What do you need from me to start?
The final or near-final manuscript, your intended age group, any character notes or references, trim size if you already know it, and your target publishing date.
Covers, formatting and publishing
How does book cover design work?
We design front cover artwork and typography first, then build the full wrap — front, spine, and back — once the final page count and paper stock set the spine width. You receive print-ready and ebook-sized versions.
How does book formatting work?
We set the interior to your chosen trim size with consistent margins, gutters, typography, and image placement, then export print-ready files plus reflowable or fixed-layout ebook files depending on the book type.
How do I prepare a book for Amazon KDP?
KDP needs a print-ready interior PDF at the correct trim size, a full wrap cover PDF sized to the final page count with bleed, and an ebook file. We prepare all three to KDP's current specification so the files pass the previewer.
What is the difference between Kindle and paperback publishing?
Kindle files are digital and usually reflowable, so text adapts to the reader's screen — except for illustrated children's books, which are supplied fixed-layout. Paperback files are fixed print PDFs with bleed and spine measurements. Most authors publish both from the same source artwork.
Working with the studio
How long does a project take?
A full picture book typically runs several weeks from brief to final delivery, depending on page count and revision rounds. Covers and single illustrations are much faster. We confirm a schedule with review points before production starts.
How many revisions are included?
Each stage — concept, sketch, and final — includes review rounds. Catching changes at the sketch stage keeps a project on schedule; substantial rewrites after final artwork is approved are quoted separately.
What files do I receive?
Print-ready and digital files appropriate to your project: high-resolution artwork, interior and cover PDFs, and web or ebook versions where relevant.
Who owns the finished work?
Ownership and usage rights are agreed in writing before production begins, so you know exactly what you can publish, print, and reuse.
